[In September 2001, the Malaysian government officially launched a multipurpose smart identification card for its citizens. This card, named 'MyKad', incorporates multiple applications with several sets of personal information about the holder of the card. Given the scope of the applications and the extensive personal information that is and can be stored in the MyKad, the implementation of the MyKad project raises crucial issues about information privacy and the protection of the personal information of Malaysians. This article critically examines these issues and contends that the existing legal framework does not adequately protect personal information. As such, there is an urgent need for the development of a proper legal framework to address the far-reaching information privacy implications arising from the project. The author argues that to ensure greater protection of personal information in Malaysia and to better regulate the collection and use of personal information on the MyKad, there is a need for both strong personal data protection legislation and judicial recognition of a right to information privacy as a fundamental human right guaranteed by the Malaysian Constitution.] I INTRODUCTION
